đź‘‹ Welcome to Scout Harbor!
Helping Seniors Stay Savvy, Safe, and Smiling in a Fast-Moving Tech World
Hello there, friends!
I’m David Hawley, your friendly neighborhood “Retired Dude,” lifelong tinkerer, and occasional accidental tech support agent for friends and family. (If you’ve ever had to explain “what’s an app” more than once, we might already be related.)
You’ve just landed at Scout Harbor — a place where seniors and really, anyone curious about today’s digital world can explore ideas, tools, and tips for living smarter (and maybe laughing along the way).
đź’ˇ Why This Blog Exists
Why don’t we just be Frank or Sally?: today’s technology moves faster than a kid on an electric scooter. One minute you’re learning to text with your thumbs, and the next thing you know, artificial intelligence is writing grocery lists, talking back, and trying to name your dog.
That’s where Scout Harbor comes in.
This blog was born out of my own journey to make sense of the modern online world — and to help others like me feel a little more comfortable, capable, and confident with technology.
Here’s what you can expect to find here:
🖥️ Tech Tips Made Simple
No geek speak required! I’ll break down how to use practical tools like email, smartphones, social media, and even AI apps that can make life easier — not harder. If I can figure it out (after pressing the wrong button three times), so can you.
đźš« Avoiding Scams and Staying Safe Online
We’ve all seen those sneaky scams — fake calls from “the IRS,” mysterious prize offers, and “support” emails that sound just a little too friendly. I’ll share easy ways to spot them, avoid them, and keep your money and identity safe where they belong: with you. Even as I write this someone sent a text asking me to go out to dinner tonight…YES, with absolutely no contact information of any kind, written or technical !
🧓 Scout Harbor for Senior Living
Just try organizing medications to maybe video chatting with grandkids, I’ll explore gadgets, apps, and simple life hacks that make daily life smoother and more enjoyable. You’ll also find posts about staying independent, informed, and engaged — without needing a computer science degree. A little communication (talking to a human) might help sometimes?
🪡 Creative and Personal Adventures
When I’m not wrestling with my laptop, I’m cross-stitching, sketching, quilting, or building wooden model boats that sometimes actually float. Expect a few posts about hobbies, humor, and the joy of keeping your hands (and mind – you know the one that remembers things?) busy in retirement.
🌎 What’s Coming Up
Here are a few of the topics I’ll be covering soon:
- “AI for the Rest of Us” — how to use ChatGPT and similar tools for fun, learning, and saving time.
- “Top 10 Scams Targeting Seniors (and How to Outsmart Them).”
- “The Tech-Phobic Survival Guide: Baby Steps for Getting Comfortable with Modern Gadgets.”
- “Online Fun: Great YouTube Channels, Games, and Tools for Curious Seniors.”
- “Digital Decluttering: How to Keep Your Inbox and Desktop From Looking Like a Junk Drawer.”
🕺 A Little About Me
I live in Central Arizona, where the sun is warm, the coffee is strong, and my Wi-Fi only occasionally gives up. My tech journey started back when Apple’s first desktop computer could barely play a game of Pong — and I’ve been hooked (and occasionally confused) ever since.
These days, I’m passionate about helping folks in their 60s, 70s, 80s, and beyond discover that technology doesn’t have to be scary — it can actually make life richer, safer, and a whole lot more fun.
💬 Let’s Stay Connected
I’d love to hear from you — your stories, your questions, your “you won’t believe what this app just did” moments. Drop a comment, share your thoughts, or just say hello.
Thanks for visiting Scout Harbor. Here’s to staying curious, cautious, and confident — one click at a time.
